Our Goal

Wacheva Cultural Arts believes in bringing the African culture from different African countries to Central New York. We are then able to provide our students and the community with the various teaching styles and abilities that are unique to each teacher. Some say that once they learn a number of dance steps for a particular drum beat, that they already “know” the dance. But if a teacher from the same country taught that dance, it may appear completely foreign to that student just because of a different teaching style or ability.

That is why Wacheva Cultural Arts believes in the integration of professional African dance and drum teachers. We encourage the CNY community to experience all different styles of African culture.

"The Origin of African Art"
From the beginning, this art was discovered by the ancestors in the forest. Today, this art has been shared by "disciples" in villages and cities across cultures, throughout the world.

"The Zaouly Mask"
(zah - wuhly)

The Zaouly mask is a symbol of the Gouro culture from the Ivory Coast, West Africa.

The story tells us that Djela Lou Zaouly (jayla - lu - zah - wuhly) was a goddess for the Gouro people.

The Gouro word "Djela Lou Zaouly" stands for "The Lion's Daughter" -- Djela means lion; Lou means daughter.

The Zaouly dance is a seduction dance peformed by a masked character whose finesse, elegance and grace contributes to the charm of this dance from the Gouro people.

W
acheva Cultural Arts
(formerly known as JFOB Cultural Arts) is proud to announce the 2nd Central New York West African Dance, Drum, Mask Workshop and Show of September 2005 was a success.

With the large turn out of dancers and drummers from Rochester, Ithaca, Oswego, Syracuse, New York City and more, we are well on our way to finding a larger space to hold the workshops in September 2006. Thank you all for your support and incredible love, passion and commitment to learning African culture. The energy that each and every one of you brought to the workshops was inspiring, and enabled the classes to be so fun and exciting. For those of us who have ever taken an African dance class, we know that the energy of the students around us has a profound affect on our class experience. When the students of the class are able to come together in joy, excitement and non-judgement, we're then able to create a safe space which allows one to express the freedoms of their spirit.

Wacheva Cultural Arts believes in creating this space for dancers and drummers. We believe in the unity of the dance and drum community. We thank you for your participation and look forward to seeing you all again in September 2006.
